Why is the rainy season so important for Cameroon?
Primary water source
The heavy rainfall provides the necessary water resources for plant growth , which is particularly crucial in the extensive rainforest areas in the south, center, and east of the country. It also fills the wells for the local population.
Multiple harvests
In the southeastern, central and eastern regions of the country, the two distinct rainy seasons allow farmers to plant and harvest grain at least twice a year .
Economic livelihood
The agricultural sector accounts for approximately 45% of Cameroon’s GDP and employs over 80% of the working population. Without regular seasonal rainfall, this enormous workforce cannot produce food and cash crops (such as cocoa) that are vital for feeding the population.
