Our project and our values
Learn more about Cameroon and our humanitarian project in Bekoko.
We operate the first medical health centre in Bekoko and run it with local staff. In this way, we create a point of contact for consultations, treatments and prevention work. Our goal is to improve the health situation in Cameroon in a sustainable way.
Our project
Learn more about Cameroon and our humanitarian project in Bekoko.
The village of Bekoko, located near Douala, the largest city in Cameroon and bordering the crisis region, had no health facilities whatsoever.
Although the nearest hospital in Douala is only about 50 km away, the journey there is very complicated, expensive, and time-consuming. As a result, many people only make the trip when it is already too late, or unfortunately not even then.
People with limited mobility have no access to medical care, as there are no ambulances and public transport is only available via moto-taxis. For these reasons, the association KamerunGO! supported its local project partner, the NGO Hope and Life Cameroon (which was also founded by the KamerunGO! founders), in its plan to build and run a community hospital with local staff.
The center offers Bekoko residents treatment for acute illnesses, preventative check-ups, vaccinations, and minor accidents. In addition to the outpatient clinic, the center has 9 inpatient beds and 3 beds for infants, as well as a well-equipped laboratory and a pharmacy.
Furthermore, preventative work is carried out (e.g., health campaigns in schools and kindergartens), and consultations on various health issues are offered. The local population thus gains access to primary medical care as well as information on health and prevention. Thanks to the new center, diseases can be detected and treated early. This should significantly alleviate the precarious health situation in the region through effective treatments and the reduction of new infections.
Project overview
Opening health centre
Despite the very adverse circumstances due to the difficult political situation in the country, construction work progressed rapidly, and the ambitious schedule could largely be met in the last two years before the opening.
The core team working at the hospital met regularly even before the opening, developing concepts and work processes, exchanging ideas, planning the facilities, and maintaining contact with the local community. Two of our employees also participated in further training courses, which we also funded.
The construction was carried out using local workers and, where necessary, supported by skilled personnel (volunteer work) from Switzerland. This was required, for example, for excavation work and the installation of the solar panels. We built sustainably using local building materials and labor, thereby creating jobs.
